Meet our founder
I’m Charlie. I found climbing as a teenager and was instantly talked out of it by my parents, who saw it as dangerous and fringe. The years that followed were self-destructive. Climbing never fully left me, and I came back to it years later.
I bumbled along for a while and started finding my place in the community a few years ago. Since then it has become a big part of my life, and it has brought out both the best and worst in me. I’ve almost been in tears more times than I can count, had tantrums that would make a toddler blush, clipped the chains on projects I’d invested months into, been shaking head to toe clipping draws, and had a couple of bad falls I was lucky to walk away from.
Climbing helped put me on a better path. My partner backed me to pursue Túffenup while we were moving to a new city and starting a family. It also gave me a route out of corporate work, which never suited me and which I was never much good at.
When creating the flagship product Hard Grit my original theory was that I could create a rock climbing hand cream that could literally strengthen the skin on your hands using an abrasive in a conditioning cream.
I started playing around with used coffee grounds and coconut oil, and those early experiments gave me enough confidence that I was onto something. I later learned that it also requires friction for that to work, which cannot happen with an abrasive suspended in a cream.
Fortunately I stumbled onto something that provides a real benefit, just not the one I set out to find.
Hard Grit is a hand cream designed for rock climbers that removes dead skin and grime from your hands with crushed coconut shells, which allows the quality cream to get in and help the skin recover a whole lot better.

Túffenup Kids
Alongside Túffenup, I’ve started Túffenup Kids. I know what it’s like to need a steadying hand growing up and not have one.
Five percent of every sale goes to Túffenup Kids, working with existing organisations to support young people who lack stability or a reason to believe in themselves.
One percent goes to verified carbon and plastic removal.
I take a smaller margin to make both happen.
